When Starfleet Command assigns the <I>Enterprise</I> the task of transporting important ambassadors from many alien worlds to the Babel Conference, Captain Kirk is surprised to learn that Vulcan ambassador Sarek and his human wife, Amanda, are in fact Lieutenant Commander Spock's parents. Dealing with the various alien delegates proves to be a particularly troublesome task for the captain and crew, and tensions soon run high; matters are further complicated when Kirk learns that an unidentified ship is now following the <I>Enterprise</I>. During a cocktail party, Tellarite Ambassador Gav argues with Sarek over the admission of Coridan into the Federation; when Gav is later found dead, circumstantial evidence implicates Sarek as the murderer. The stress of the accusation causes Sarek's heart condition to worsen, and he suffers the equivalent of a heart attack. Doctor McCoy attempts to correct the damage, but his unfamiliarity with Vulcan physiology slows his progress. Spock is needed as a blood donor, but when Kirk is attacked and badly injured by an Andorian named Thelev, the Vulcan assumes command of the <I>Enterprise</I> and refuses to participate in the vital operation on his father. Spock insists on investigating the vessel that is pursuing them, forcing Kirk to fake a recovery and return to the bridge, ensuring that Spock is able to assist in the operation. Then Kirk discovers that their mysterious pursuers are in contact with someone on board the <I>Enterprise</I> - meaning that one of the delegates is not what they seem...
